QLD: Councils may ask for bigger fuel subsidy
Queensland's 129 local councils will consider asking the state government to increase
its fuel subsidy, at present running at 8.35 cents a litre.
A motion to be put to the Local Government Association of Queensland annual meeting
on the Gold Coast asks for an increase because local authorities are big fuel users in
road maintenance and construction.
A motion from Cooloola Shire says road works are essential services and Australia's
efficiency as a primary and secondary producer depends on good, low cost roads being delivered
by local government.
A Cooloola delegation spokesman says local councils are concerned at the impact of
rising fuel prices and an increased government subsidy is warranted.
Premier PETER BEATTIE says this is an option his government faces because of concerns
the oil companies are pocketing the subsidy instead of passing it on to motorists.
The motion will be debated tomorrow by delegates.
