NSW:Millions wasted on Sydney project: A-G

SYDNEY, Dec 2 AAP - The NSW Auditor-General says $356 million was wasted on the Sydney
Metro transport project, which was scrapped by the state government.

But the debacle had not only cost taxpayers financially, it also meant other transport
projects weren't a priority.

In a critical assessment of the wastage incurred, Auditor-General Peter Achterstraat
on Thursday called on the government to review how the process was handled to avoid a
recurrence.

Mr Achterstraat said of the $412 million spent on the scrapped project to June 30 this
year, $356 million "does not appear to be of any future benefit to New South Wales".

"The cost to New South Wales is not just in dollar terms, but also in time delays to
other transport priorities as scarce resources are diverted to projects that do not proceed
to completion," he said in a report into the state's transport agencies.

"In my view, the New South Wales government should review and identify lessons learnt
from the metro project," he said.

"Such a review should explore whether the government's decision-making processes minimise
future risks of spending taxpayers' money on projects which do not proceed."

The multi-billion dollar CBD and Western metro projects were scrapped by NSW Premier
Kristina Keneally in February.

During a 2009/10 budget estimates hearing last month, the former head of the Sydney
Metro Authority Rodd Staples said the total cost of the abandoned CBD and West metro projects
was about $419 million at the end of October.

About $96 million has been paid in compensation to large contractors and small businesses
affected by the project's axing.

Water Minister PENNY WONG says a new study has vindicated the federal government's
water purchase program in the Murray-Darling Basin .. showing it has eased financial pressures
on irrigators.

The government has released the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics
report which models the impact of the one-and-a-half billion dollars in water buybacks
conducted so far.

It's found the lost production from water purchases was small compared to the impact
of the drought and showed the program was helping irrigators prepare for the new lower
limits on water use .. to be instigated under the Murray-Darling Basin plan.

SYDNEY, Aug 4 AAP - Customs officers have netted 1,331 vials of steroids hidden in
the false bottom of a suitcase searched at a Sydney airport.

A 19-year-old Lebanese man was charged with attempted drug smuggling after flying from

Scientific analysis revealed the vials found in the baggage contained the performance

Customs spokesman Richard Janeczko said officers were cracking down on steroid smugglers.

"This detection sends a warning to those seeking to avoid Customs controls that we
have the skills and capability to detect and investigate these matters and prosecute those

The man will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on September 15.

About 4,000 Centrelink call centre staff have held lunchtime meetings throughout Australia

Centrelink has introduced a new computerised roster system, called Total View, to replace

Korea Thrunet to Introduce Enterprise Resource Planning System.

SEOUL, South Korea, and NEW YORK, July 26 /PRNewswire/ --

Korea Thrunet Co., Ltd. (Nasdaq: KOREA) ("Thrunet"), Korea's largest cable modem broadband Internet-access services provider and a major provider of enterprise network services, announced today that the Company will implement an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system beginning in the second half of fiscal 2001. The ERP system is an integrated information system designed to enhance a company's competitiveness by more efficient management of all human resources and physical assets.

Thrunet will utilize Oracle Korea Ltd.'s ("Oracle") ERP product, 'Oracle E-Business Suite', while Korea Samis, Inc, a subsidiary of the Korean accounting/consulting firm Samil, will consult on implementation of the ERP system within the Company. Samil is also a member firm of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. For the successful launch of its ERP system, Thrunet has formed a task force team. After the completion of its business analysis and system design by the end of July, the Company expects to finish testing and the implementation by 2001 year end and the system to be fully in place in the beginning of 2002.

One of the major advantages of using an ERP system is the enhanced ability to control and manage assets as well as better monitor financial and operating performances of the Company. Up until now, Thrunet has been using various Management Information Systems (MIS) relating to its accounting, asset management and customer relation functions, which were operating completely independent of each other. Following the full implementation of the ERP system, the Company expects to be able to control and manage unified information from sales and purchase orders that can be shared on the front-end, all the way through to managerial accounting functions on the back-end.

The Company noted that the biggest reason for choosing Oracle's ERP product is its modularity and expandability. Unlike other ERP packages, Oracle's ERP system allows Thrunet to purchase and implement one module at a time, and other modules thereafter, when needed, with full interfaceability. This means that Thrunet does not have to revise the entire ERP system to introduce a new module.

Charles Rim, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, commented, "As the Company has experienced tremendous organic growth since its inception, the need for an integrated and unified Information System to help monitor and assess operating performance and asset management has grown enormously. By implementing the ERP system, we can enhance our productivity by eliminating unnecessary and redundant business processes, and increase our organizational efficiency through integrated and unified communication of information. We will also be able to effectively address the rapid change of the market and our customers' needs by having immediate access to necessary data and information on time."

Founded in July 1996, Korea Thrunet Co., Ltd. is a major provider of broadband Internet access services and enterprise network services in Korea. The first to offer broadband Internet services in Korea, with 1,050,807 paying end-users at the end of June 2001, Korea Thrunet currently passes over 8.3 million homes. Thrunet service features "always-on " Internet access at speeds up to 100 times faster than traditional dial-up Internet access. On the enterprise network side, Korea Thrunet provides dedicated leased line services to more than corporate 310 customers, with major Korean telecommunications companies such as SK Telecom and Shinsegi Telecomm accounting for a substantial majority of enterprise network revenues.

This release may contain forward-looking statements that are subject to risks and uncertainties. Important factors which could cause actual result to differ materially from those in the forward-looking statements, include but are not limited to: the Company's short operating history which makes it difficult to predict its future results of operations; the Company's history of operating losses and expected future losses which could impede its ability to address the risks and difficulties encountered by companies in new and rapidly evolving markets; the Company's future operating results could fluctuate which may cause volatility or a decline in the price of the Company's stock; the possibility that the Company may not be able to price its services above the overall cost of bandwidth causing its financial results to suffer; and other factors detailed in the Company's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

REP. ELLISON AND 'GAY GIRL'

He wasn't the only one fooled

Last week, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., sent out tweets urging his nearly 16,000 followers to write to the Syrian ambassador regarding Amina Abdallah Arraf, whom he described as an American blogger "detained and held by Syrian authority."

She "needs you," he said in one of his tweets. "Call for her immediate release. ... Do it now."

At the time, a "Free Amina" Facebook page had garnered more than 13,000 supporters. But apparently, there was no Amina Abdullah Arraf. News reports now say she's a fictional character on the "Gay Girl in Damascus Blog," reportedly written by 40-year-old Tom MacMaster, a married American man in Scotland.

"This experience has sadly only confirmed my feelings regarding the often superficial coverage of the Middle East," he said in a confessional blog post Sunday.

Ellison wasn't the only one fooled. Earlier this year, CNN conducted an e-mail interview with the blogger for a story titled, "Will gays be 'sacrificial lambs' in Arab spring?" Political blogger Andrew Sullivan also championed "Gay Girl."

Given the details described in the blog, it's hard to believe anyone took it seriously. The blogger's claims of living the life of an openly lesbian woman in not-so-gay-friendly Syria should have served as a red flag that the claims were dubious.

And this passage doesn't sound remotely believable: "Our culture has historically been far more at ease with homoeroticism than most Western cultures; I walk more easily hand in hand with a woman here than I ever would in the USA."

Fortunately, the blogger didn't pass the smell test for some journalists. Last week, after "a cousin" claimed on the blog that Arraf had been abducted, the Christian Science Monitor rightly asked: "Is there really a 'Gay Girl in Damascus?'"

The newspaper said that the blog seemed dubious and railed against coverage in the Washington Post, CNN, the Guardian and elsewhere that had accepted the posts at face value.

"There's the simple implausibility that a Syrian woman in Damascus felt safe publicly identifying as gay, in a blog in which she shares explicit if sophomoric erotic poetry," the Monitor reported with skepticism. "In one post she discusses making out with a fellow Syrian girl in the Damascus airport [not recommended behavior]."

It appears that once one outlet treated the blog as serious, others followed suit, compromising the standards of good journalism in the process. If anything, the episode shows that journalists (and congressional leaders) need to be even more rigorous in scrutinizing Internet claims.

By the weekend, the Minnesota congressman was sending out apologies on his Twitter feed.

"I might have been duped," he said. "News is pointing to a hoax; my apologies. Syrian people still suffering."

Cloud Hosting company iomart Group acquires Switch Media.

iomart Group plc (AIM:IOM), the managed hosting and cloud computing services company, has bought an award-winning domain name and hosting company in Liverpool as it continues to expand its hosting offering to the UK market.

iomart has acquired the entire issued share capital of Switch Media Limited for a total cash consideration of [pounds sterling]1.25 million ($2.07M). The announcement was made to the stock market at 0700 hours April 27, 2011

Based in Liverpool, Switch Media supplies domain name and shared hosting services to small businesses, operating in a similar market to iomart's Easyspace division. The acquisition of Switch Media brings with it a customer base of more than 10,000, providing a strong base of additional business from which the Glasgow-headquartered Group can expand its small company hosting business.

Angus MacSween, CEO of iomart Group plc, said: "Buying Switch Media is iomart's second purchase in six months and continues our policy of expansion by both organic and acquired growth. Switch Media is an excellent complementary business to our existing operations and trades in the small company segment of the hosting services market. It will enhance the growth of iomart through expansion of the Group's customer base and access to new clients and is a further step in the achievement of iomart's strategy of building a leading hosting company in the UK"

Chris Evans, Managing Director of Switch Media Limited, said: "This is a very positive move for us. It allows Switch Media access to iomart's own wholly-owned data centres and its full range of cloud computing services, enabling us to offer our customers a wider range of services. I'm looking forward to continuing to drive Switch Media forward as part of iomart Group"

Switch Media was founded in 2002 and has built an excellent reputation for combining a solid hosting service with creativity. It has produced work for clients including Samsung, Littlewoods, Harley Davidson, Wella, Island Records and Wagamama and is an approved supplier of new media to the BBC. Last year Switch Media won Gold at the prestigious Roses Advertising Awards for its design work on 'Letterpool', the book project that explored Liverpool's history and culture through its signs, branding, language and graffiti.

This is the second acquisition made by iomart Group plc in the last six months. In November 2010 iomart bought Titan Internet, one of the UK's most respected and technically advanced hosting companies for [pounds sterling]4.2 million.

In its pre-close trading statement to the stock market on 30 March 2011, iomart Group plc reported strong results across its operating segments. For the year to 31 March 2011, it expects to show an EBIDTA (Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation, acquisition costs and share based payments) of between [pounds sterling]6.4m to [pounds sterling]6.6m which is ahead of market consensus.

Angus MacSween added: "The integration of Switch Media should allow us to achieve a significant level of cost savings and should improve the company's EBITDA margin as well as bring an immediate earnings enhancement to iomart Group as a whole."

For the year to 31 December 2010, Switch Media had adjusted EBITDA of [pounds sterling]79,000 ($131K) and turnover of [pounds sterling]1.3m. ($2.1M)

Of the [pounds sterling]1.25m iomart Group has paid for Switch Media, [pounds sterling]1.025m has been paid on completion and a further [pounds sterling]225k is payable no earlier than October 2011 subject to certain performance criteria being met. In addition, it is expected that Switch Media will have net cash on completion of approximately [pounds sterling]100k resulting therefore in an initial net cash outlay of [pounds sterling]925,000.

REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER CONVICTED OF DISTRIBUTION AND POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.

HOUSTON, TX -- The following information was released by the Houston Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation:

U.S. District Judge Gray Miller has convicted Burt Hughes, 58, a Houston resident, of one count each of distributing and possessing child pornography following a stipulated facts bench trial this morning, United States Attorney Jose Angel Moreno announced today.

Indicted in August of last year, Hughes requested a trial before Judge Miller without a jury. During the trial held this morning, the United States provided the court with evidence which proved Hughes was distributing child pornography images through peer-to-peer software using his home computer. Initially, the La Porte Police Department downloaded several images of child pornography from Hughes. The images were passed on to the FBI Innocent Images Task Force. Based on the information obtained from the downloads, a search warrant was issued. The warrant was executed at Hughes' residence where several computers were seized. Forensic analysis of the computer revealed more than 560 videos containing child pornography.

Hughes faces a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 40 years in federal prison on the distribution of child pornography conviction, while the possession of child pornography conviction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment. Both counts of conviction also carry a maximum fine of $250,000 as possible punishment. Upon completion of any prison term imposed, Hughes also faces a maximum life term of supervised release during which the court can impose a number of special conditions designed to protect children and prohibit the use of the Internet. Individuals convicted of these crimes are required to register as a sex offender, a requirement already imposed on Hughes based on a previous conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for July 22, 2011.

Hughes was sentenced to prison and ordered to register as a sex offender following a conviction in a Texas state court for fondling a child in violation of Texas Penal Code 21.11(A)(1). He was released from state prison in 1994. In federal custody since his August 2010 arrest, Hughes will remain in custody pending his July 2011 sentencing hearing.

Malawi - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband.

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/dcf6c0/malawi_telecoms) has announced the addition of the "Malawi - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband" report to their offering.

One of the worlds least developed countries, Malawi is expected to be able to avoid a recession as a result of the global economic crisis, although its GDP growth will gradually slow from almost 10% in 2008 to around 3% in 2011. Penetration rates in all sectors of the telecommunications market are still well below regional averages. With the imminent launch of the third network, G-Mobile, the mobile sector is set for a boost when it finally moves beyond the duopoly held for many years by Zain and TNM, the mobile arm of fixed-line incumbent MTL. In parallel, however, the ARPU is expected to continue its rapid decline.

Competition for MTL is also set to arrive in the fixed-line sector in early 2010 with the second operator Access Communications (ACL), already licensed in 2007. The company may eventually emerge as the countrys fourth mobile operator, since the CDMA2000 technology it uses supports full mobility. Malawis telecoms regulator, MACRA has announced it plans to licence a fourth mobile network.

The fixed-line sector itself has seen a revival following MTLs privatisation and the introduction of CDMA2000 fixed-wireless services. A national fibre backbone is being implemented, and the country is set to gain access to international submarine fibre optic cables for the first time in 2010 when a transit link via neighbouring countries is completed. Provided a suitable regulatory regime is put in place, this will bring down the cost of international bandwidth and deliver a boost to the broadband market. The Internet sector is reasonably competitive with 15 licensed ISPs, but the limited availability and high cost of international bandwidth has held back growth and kept broadband prices high. Several ISPs are rolling out WiMAX wireless broadband networks, and the CDMA2000 networks of MTL and ACL support broadband speeds with the EV-DO technology being used. Mobile data services are currently limited to GPRS, as 3G systems have not yet been launched.

Adaptiv Software Adopts Online Identity as Corporate Name; Workplace Scheduling Application Experts to Host America Online's First Interactive Conference on the Topic Jan. 10; Worldwide Web Home Page Debuts Today.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 1994--Adaptiv Software Corp., formerly Adaptive Software Inc., has changed its corporate name and logo to maintain consistency with its online screen name, "Adaptiv" in both the America Online and Internet domains.

The name change takes effect as the company launches a proactive effort to introduce, promote, market and sell its popular PeopleScheduler workforce scheduling software product to the online community.

"We want to establish a consistent identity in all markets, and we are known as `Adaptiv' in the online world," said Bob Kimball, Adaptiv senior vice president of sales and marketing. "By changing our name to match our online addresses, we can achieve this, while maintaining the recognition we already have as the makers of PeopleScheduler."

On Jan. 10, 6 p.m. Pacific, 9 p.m. Eastern, Adaptiv will host its first "Rotunda" on America Online. The rotunda is a forum for interactive discussion among AOL subscribers on topics of interest. Adaptiv has also developed interactive content, questions, answers and tips on the subject of workforce scheduling as well as product information on its software solution, PeopleScheduler (R) PLUS, for the Internet. Adaptiv's "home page" will debut on the Worldwide Web today at http:\\www.adaptiv.com.

A recent America Online posting of PeopleScheduler information generated questions and raised issues concerning managing the company schedule in today's changing workforce. Ken Forbes, Adaptiv's president and chief executive officer, who has more than ten years of executive experience in scheduling issues, will co-host next Tuesday's interactive conference with Bob Kimball.

"Employers and employees faced with contingent schedules, flex-time and part-time situations, job sharing, outsourcing and other unique arrangements have a very real need to reduce the amount of time they spend on this necessary task," Forbes stated. "But, managers and supervisors in restaurants, emergency service organizations, telemarketing outfits, catalog and retail companies have always faced scheduling nightmares, namely spending more than half of their work week developing and then changing, the company work schedule.

"We'll address both contemporary and traditional scheduling problems, and provide specific information about how our software solution can be applied immediately to any business that has to create a schedule -- any kind of schedule," said Forbes.

Adaptiv introduced its newest version of workforce scheduling software for Windows Adaptiv PeopleScheduler (R) PLUS version 2.0 in November and began volume shipments in December. PeopleScheduler has been favorably reviewed in popular computer industry publications and users have recently been featured in national magazines including FORTUNE, Catalog Age and InformationWeek. Adaptiv Software Inc. is a privately held corporation, founded in 1989 to solve workforce scheduling problems. The company has its headquarters in Irvine, Calif.

Vietnam Post and Telecom To Begin Testing IPN's VoIP Servers and IP-Phones(TM) for Nationwide Offering.

IPN Communications, a majority-owned subsidiary of DataLogic International, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: DLGI; Berlin Stock Exchange: 779612), today announced that Vietnam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT) will begin testing its VoIP servers and IP- Phones(TM) in consideration for a nationwide offering.

VNPT, with last year revenue of USD $1.6 billion, is the largest state- owned post and telecommunications company in Vietnam. IPN has been working with VNPT and VASC, a software and media subsidiary of VNPT, in provisioning the test equipment and building a business case for a countrywide deployment of IPN's VoIP technologies over VNPT's extensive Internet infrastructure.

IPN's CEO, Michael Wu, commented, "We are pleased to be working with the Vietnam's most dominant telecommunications and Internet backbone operator. Preliminary discussions have indicated that there's a strong case for the two parties forming a relationship to offer IPN's VoIP calling solutions to Vietnam."

"Vietnam currently has approximately 7.3 million telephone subscribers, representing less than 10 percent of the population. Its Internet subscriber base had reached 700,000, an increased of 114% from 2002," commented Keith Nguyen, DataLogic's President.

"The telecommunications and Internet industry in Vietnam is undergoing phenomenal changes to make the services more available to the overall population at a lower cost. The country's current technology evolution and growth trend is creating attractive business opportunities for us in the VoIP and wireless communication sectors. As part of our business plan, we will place strong emphasis in capturing the market share in the region this year," Nguyen added.

About Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation

Established in 1995, VNPT is the largest state-owned post and telecommunications company in Vietnam with revenue in excess of USD $1.6 billion. EA Announces NFL STREET 2 Cover Features Jeremy Shockey and Hip-Hop Artist, Xzibit.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) announced today that All-pro New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey and hip hop artist Xzibit will share the cover of NFL STREET 2 from the EA SPORTS BIG(TM) brand. Both will serve as spokesmen for the title, due in stores on December 26. The original NFL STREET debuted in January 2004 and sold over a million copies.

"If it wasn't for the kind of street football played in NFL STREET 2, I would not be where I am today," said Shockey. "This is how most NFL players started their careers and now you can play at a new level, an-all new high flying football game with incredible wall moves and new modes like Crush the Carrier and Jump Ball Battle."

Shockey, a top round draft pick out of the University of Miami (Fla.), has been to the Pro Bowl every year since he came into the NFL in 2002. For the first time on an EA sports video game title he is joined on the cover by a music artist, Xzibit, who not only has five best-selling albums, but hosts top-rated "Pimp My Ride" on MTV. As an exciting new character in the game, Xzibit teaches you the rules of the street and provided extensive voiceover work for the game. Xzibit's scorching new album, "Weapons Of Mass Destruction," drops Tuesday, December 14.

NFL STREET 2 adds a whole new dimension to gameplay with wall moves and high flying football this year. Now for the first time, receivers can run off the walls, change passing lanes by running the QB up a building, and take advantage of eye-popping wall jukes and all-new hurdles. Players will descend on Bay City's 10 new environments in an all-new persistent world to build their teams, their reps, and their battle plans one field at a time. Once you own the walls, you will own the city.

NFL STREET 2, which is being developed by EA Tiburon, will be in stores on December 26 for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox(R) video game system from Microsoft and the Nintendo GameCube(TM). It is rated E for Everyone with descriptor of Mild Violence by the ESRB. Online(a) gamers will enjoy enhanced features on the PlayStation 2 console and for the first time, Xbox Live(TM) Support. Approaching outsourcing as part of the `in' crowd.(VARIETY)(Al Sicherman)

Byline: Al Sicherman; Staff Writer

In addition to Uncle Al's many and painfully detailed descriptions of household and automotive repairs that required umpteen trips to the hardware store, he also has focused the brilliant searchlight of his powerful column on examining peculiar trends and imagining how much more peculiar they might get if it were up to morons like him - or economists.

A trend we're hearing a great deal about these days is "outsourcing" - specifically the relatively recent practice of shifting such jobs as customer-service representative to low-wage economies overseas, where the whole idea of the $79 towel-warmer you're ordering is offensive to the $5-a-day person taking your call.

In a move close to Uncle Al's figurative home - although it is distant literally - the Reuters news agency has moved financial reporting on some U.S. firms to India. Really. Apparently, the data necessary to write the reports is on the Internet, so they can be written in India as easily as in the United States. Maybe even easier because nobody is calling the Indian writers, urging them to switch phone companies.

Upon learning of this development, Uncle Al arranged, as an experiment, to have today's column written for $6 by a contract employee at a journalism agency in Fluoristan, a barely functioning country low in tooth decay. (The $6 was the standing price, Uncle Al learned, but until now there had been no takers.)

If this deal were to continue, Uncle Al would work 3 1/2 days a week, doing whatever he does in the Taste section, but instead of writing this column for the other 1 1/2 days, he'd stay home and watch reruns of "Matlock." But without that 1 1/2 days' pay, he would have to seriously reduce his purchases of Little Debbie Nutty Bars, mystery novels, doughnuts, chocolate, butter, cream and peculiar collectibles.

It goes without saying that he would stop buying the newspaper. But he felt like saying it anyway.

The circle of cutbacks

He does not, by himself, consume enough of any of these items (possibly except Little Debbie Nutty Bars) for his cutback to affect production, but if enough other high-living columnists were to be outsourced, reduced demand might result in doughnut-industry layoffs. That might cut demand among remaining doughnut-shop employees for copies of the National Enquirer, and so on.

At the other end of this deal is the author of the outsourced column, who lives in Squalor (the capital of Fluoristan). Uncle Al must say that the column wasn't terrible. Here are the first three paragraphs:

Uncle Izblk was minding his own business recently (partly because the last time he minded somebody else's business, that whole family attacked his hut with pitchforks, and it took him three days and five trips to the Pile of Dirt to repair it), when he noticed that the back of his oxcart was sagging to one side.

To tell the truth (although that is not usually a good idea in Fluoristan), Uncle Izblk rather enjoys relating tales of oxcart repairs that involve multiple trips to the Pile of Rocks to find just the right rock for beating against the end of the axle to mash it out enough that the wheel won't fall off. Uncle Izblk knows that newer ox carts have a stick through a hole near the end of the axle to keep the wheel from falling off, but he regards keeping the wheel on the old way as a challenge.

So Uncle Izblk drank a cup of mud (he understands that in some places "mud" is slang for a caffeine beverage - that is not the case in Fluoristan) and set off for the Pile of Rocks.

Uncle Al now has mixed feelings about this project.

Working at working

On one hand, he feels he earns his salary - he provides at least 98 cents' worth of effort for every dollar he is paid (once in a while he just hides in the elevator or walks around the newsroom, carrying papers and looking thoughtful). And he's not sold on the idea that jobs sent abroad turn into demand for American products.

(Heck, even if Uncle Izblk wanted to spend all $6 on Little Debbie Nutty Bars, mystery novels and American doughnuts, chocolate, butter, cream and peculiar collectibles - which Uncle Al thinks even an economist would agree is unlikely - it's only $6, compared with the 1 1/2 days' of U.S.-scale wages that Uncle Al would stop spending on that stuff if Uncle Izblk got the job.)

On the other hand, Uncle Al realized that he's not fully comfortable saying that Uncle Izblk (who seems like a nice-enough fellow who happens to live in Fluoristan) isn't entitled to - if not a slice of the pie, at least a little bite of the pie. Or maybe just to lick the plate after Uncle Al eats the pie.

One solution would be for Uncle Izblk to sell his $6 columns to newspapers in Fluoristan (if there were any), and to spend the $6 in the Fluoristani economy, where it would buy lots more (because Fluoristan's lousy wages mean stuff produced there is cheap). All that's needed to get that ball rolling is to jump-start the Fluoristani economy. (But if anybody here knew how to do that, Uncle Al wishes they'd jump-start this one first.)

Or perhaps Fluoristani workers should organize and demand better wages. Higher wages in Fluoristan would reduce the advantage of outsourcing - and the better wages for any jobs still outsourced would create demand for more Fluoristani goods and services - thus more jobs in Fluoristan, and better wages.

Once that happens, of course, most of the jobs outsourced to Fluoristan will be re-outsourced to someplace where they're still cheap, leaving Uncle Izblk not earning $25 instead of the $6 he used to not earn before all this started.

Watch this space for the Uncle Quznat column.
