This casebook by Mabry (law, Howard U. School of Law) and Kelly (law, U. of Washington School of Law) introduces the adoption law of the United States. Because adoption law arises strictly out of statutes and regulations and not out of common law, the casebook emphasizes statutes from every region of the United States and as many states as possible and includes edited cases from several jurisdictions in which courts interpret and apply different adoption statutes. Furthermore, in recognition of the network of caseworkers, attorneys, child advocates, psychologists, legislators, and judges and the complexities of adjudicating the interests of birth parents, adoptees, and prospective adoptive parents, the authors include interdisciplinary materials that deal with sociological and psychological aspects of adoption alongside legal aspects. They include information on the practice of adoption law in addition to theoretical matters and also include case-based problems. Information on Internet resources and the role of the Internet in the adoption process is included in the appendices.
