Fed: Trade deal strikes right cultural balance: PM

CANBERRA, Feb 9 AAP - The Australia-US trade deal struck a fair balance between preserving
the nation's cultural identity and recognising the global reach of the media market, Prime
Minister John Howard said today.

The federal government says the free trade agreement (FTA) will protect Australia's
right to ensure local content quotas in current and emerging media.

Mr Howard told reporters Australia's cultural identity was very precious and was worth
protecting.
