WA: Residents return home without power and water

Residents of Gingin in Western Australia's mid-north have returned to their homes -many without power or drinking water - after a bushfire threatened the town.

The 600 residents were forced to flee yesterday as bushfires threatened homes.

Most of the fire was contained last night and firefighters from Gingin, Perth and surroundingareas have been mopping up today.

Crews from Western Power have also been working to restore power supply to the townshipby this evening after power poles were damaged by the fire yesterday morning.

Many residents are also without ready access to drinking water, with several watertanks destroyed by fire and the town's ground water supply unsuitable for drinking.

Chief fire control officer MAX BORWICK says 10,000 litres of water have been broughtto Gingin today.

One house, four cars and several caravans and sheds have been destroyed in the fire.
